A rather unusual name for a church in Scotland, it dates back to Rome and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as Santa Maria Maggiore a Nives, or Saint Mary of the Snows. The church is no longer there, but the name remains. The Snow Kirk is now a cemetery, where the local nobility and the university enjoyed burying their dead.
