Attended vs unattended funeral: which is right?

The two main choices, side by side.

Attended funeral

The traditional option: family and friends gather for a ceremony at the time of the burial or cremation. It allows a full service and the chance to say goodbye together, and costs more — typically £2,500–£3,000 in director's charges, plus the cremation or burial fee.

Unattended (direct) funeral

No service or mourners at the cremation or burial itself; families often hold their own memorial later. It's far cheaper and simpler. See our direct cremation guide for detail.

How to decide

Think about what matters most to your family and your budget. There's no wrong choice — and you can always hold a personal celebration of life separately, whichever you pick.
