What is a direct cremation?

The simplest, lowest-cost option explained.

What it is

A direct cremation is a cremation carried out without a funeral service or mourners present. The funeral director collects and cares for the person, carries out the cremation at a time they choose, and returns the ashes to the family afterwards. Families often hold their own memorial separately, in their own time and at no extra cost to the funeral director.

Why people choose it

It's the most affordable option — typically £1,200–£1,800 — and it suits those who'd prefer to remember their loved one in a personal way rather than a formal service, or who want to keep things simple.

What to check

Confirm what's included (collection, care, the coffin, the cremation fee) and how and when the ashes are returned. Compare a few providers — direct cremation prices vary too.
